As an evolved and concerned corporate citizen, We do not see CSR as charity; not even as responsibility; but as an opportunity to impact the nearby communities positively and all our activities are determined by the concept of “Changing Lives”: where we constantly endeavor to improve the quality of life of the communities where we operate. Our activities are conceived to bridge gaps in society and help transform communities around our workplace and are concentrated around 25 villages across Tuticorin positively enhancing the quality of life of over one lakh people. Our projects are mainly focused on upliftment of the life of women, children and youth in our field of operations.

 
     
  SWEP :  
     
 
The Sterlite women empowerment project was conceived to help rural and coastal women to become self confident and economically independent. It aims to promote domestic savings among self help groups (SHGs), which allows them to take up projects that generate supplementary income for their families. Launched in March 2005, and engaged with six NGOs as their project partners and partnering with TamilNadu Women Development Corporation, SWEP has inspired in forming of 730 SHGs covering more than 10,000 rural women. From the time of inceptions more than 150 SHG groups have taken up profitable income generation activities to raise income of families and the combined savings of these SHGs today amounts to Rs.3.5 crores.

Livelihood

The Coastal Livelihood Project (CLP) was created in aim to impart vocational training in various trades and to improve employability in the community. With 13 training institutes coordinating the project, the youth are trained in various vocations like shiping management, fashion designing, readymade garment manufacturer, nursing assistant, Desk Top Publishing, Beautician, etc. More than 800 youth have benefited from the project and more 60% of them have found employability or have started entrepreneurial ventures. The project cost is being shared by Sterlite 75% and by benificieries 25%.

In order to improve the standard of living of rural women, Sterlite started seven tailoring centers. Every year seventy trainees get trained from the 10 month tailoring course, which then allows them to start up their own micro-business.

  Health  
     
  Family health has always been a priority for Sterlite, especially in rural areas where the nearest government hospital is located at a distance. We work with government’s primary health centers to provide basic health facilities in rural and coastal areas. We also run our own rural health unit in six villages covering a population of 15,000.These clinics operate six days a week and treating an average of about 80 patients per day, provide free medicines, treatment and hospital referrals

Our CSR team regularly organizes awareness programmes on HIV/AIDS awareness, Tuberculosis, Chikinguniya, Health and Hygiene and the need for immunization for children. Our health activites also focus on health camps , we conduct 12 general health camp along with Apollo Hospitals, Madurai.

 
     
  Agriculture  
Sterlite Industries in partnership with Department of Horticulture,Ottapidaram Block has initiated horticulrure trials in Banana and Vegetable Crop covering 110 acres.

Objectives
To increase the income of farmers per unit land/ per unit of irrigation water
Increase horticulture area substantially to utilize less water and realize more prices
Infrastructure Development
Sterlite Industries has signed MOU with District Administration for constructing a MOdel Primary Health Centre in Mapilaiyurani Village at a cost of Rs.1.05 crores.Company will contribute 50% of the project cost under "Nammukku Name Thittam" . Similarly a Road laying project covering a distance of 3.5 km in Tuticorin Town will be implemented ata cost of 2.4 crores.Company will contribute 33% of the project cost.
